PLEASANT, Texas — William Connie Beard, 89, of Tyler, Texas, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, in Tyler. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Nevills Chapel Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, with Dr. Mike Bloodsworth officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home of Tyler. Mr. Beard was born Aug. 16, 1912, in Naples, Texas, to Neal and Lillian Cannon Beard. He married Florine Winn of Mount Pleasant in 1936. She preceded him in death in 1989. Mr. Beard was converted into the Missionary Baptist Church in Countyline at the age of 18, and remained a devout Christian through life. In 1934, he graduated from Alma High School. He moved to Old London, Texas, where he worked in the oil field. He attended an industrial school and received a degree in welding. He went to the shipyards in Houston, where he served as a welding instructor until the end of World War II. After that he went into construction on gasoline refineries in several states. In Montana, he served as superintendent on the Hungary Horse Dam. In the late 1950s, he went to work for the Monta-Santa Chemical Co. in Texas City, Texas, and remained there until his retirement in 1974. Eventually, Mr. Beard married a high school classmate from Duncan, Helen Gilmore Patrick Beard. She preceded him in death on Dec. 24, 2000. Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Beard Hill of Tyler; a niece, Brenda Goddard Wright of Tyler; two great-nephews, Wesley Goddard and Wade Goddard and his wife Nancy; a great-niece, Ashley Paige Goddard Skinner and her husband J.J.; a great-great niece, Haven Goddard; and three great- great nephews, Jordan and Zane Skinner and Jarred Goddard.
