Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Marlow with Max Pyron officiating. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery in Lindsay under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home. Grace Hubbs was born at Wanette on Dec. 29, 1904, to Franklin Perry Word and Rosa Belle Eads Word. She was raised on a farm and was the oldest in her family. Grace and her family moved near Lindsay around 1920 and she finished high school at Hughs Consolidated High School. She attended East Central State College in Ada, where she received her teacher's certificate. She and her family then moved to Texas. Her first teaching position was at Wheeler County, Texas, where she taught for two years until the family returned to Oklahoma. Grace then taught at Cox City for three years followed by three more years at Elgin. She then taught at Bradley where she met her husband, Nolan, a photographer. They united in marriage at Pauls Valley on Dec. 23, 1944. After their wedding, they moved to Bay City, Michigan, where they resided for two years. In 1945, they returned to Oklahoma. She began teaching at the Marlow School System after she and Nolan moved there in 1954 until she retired in 1969. Grace always wanted to be a teacher and thought it to be the greatest profession in the world. One of her greatest pleasures was seeing some of her students go on to become good citizens. Following her retirement, Grace became active in several local organizations. She was a long-time member of the Business and Professional Womens Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the AARP, and the Delta Kappa Gamma. Grace was a member of the First Baptist Church and belonged to the singing group, Silvertones. Grace enjoyed painting and painted many beautiful pictures of flowers and birds. She was an Avon representative for many, many years and enjoyed meeting and visiting with her customers. One of Grace's greatest enjoyments was spending time with her sister. They were as close as two sisters could be. Grace's family describes her as a people person who truly loved her family, her friends, her church and the town she called home, Marlow. Grace was a loving aunt and will be missed by all her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 22, 1985; her parents; two brothers, Carl Word and Elva Word; and one sister, Mamie Sawyer.
