All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Duncan Banner 18 Dec 2002 Thelma Ruth Meeks On Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, Thelma Ruth Meeks of Marlow, at the age of 87, departed this earthly life to serve her Lord in His Heavenly Home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the First Christian Church in Duncan with the Rev. Tracy L. Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. Mrs. Meeks was born Sept. 11, 1915, in Marlow, to Arden B. and Daisy M. Lewis Cobb. She married Herman Pete Meeks in Marlow and he preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1982. At the age of 11, she was baptized at First Christian Church in Marlow by the Rev. O.L. Shelton. She started playing the piano for the Marlow church at the age of 12. She taught Sunday School for more than 20 years in Marlow, Chickasha and Duncan and served as pianist for the Men’s Bible Class in Duncan for 30 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Duncan since 1949, and a member of the Golden Rule Sunday School class for years. Mrs. Meeks worked at Lindley Hospital as a bookkeeper and filed insurance claims and billing for 11 years, retiring in 1977. She was Past Matron of Eastern Star and served as organist. She was Past Worthy High Priestess of Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem and also served as organist. She served as president of Christian Women’s Fellowship several times; served on Church Women United Board for four years; and served as a mentor in the reading program at Horace Mann Elementary after her retirement. She was active in Rainbow Girls and Stephens County Homemaker Extension. She was greatly loved by all who knew her. She was generous with her time and talents and spent her life doing for others. Her talents were shared through her music as well as her handiwork and has left a significant mark on all of the lives she touched. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Marie Arden and Lower L. Colley of Marlow and Daisy and Gary L. McNeill of Moore; a brother and sister-in-law, A.B. “Bud” and Helen Cobb of Sherman, Texas; six grandsons, Gene Colley and his wife, Robin, Mike Colley and his wife, Pyong, Paul, Keith, Doug and Christopher Colley; two granddaughters and their husbands, Staci and Brad Cook and April and Aaron Claybaugh; and six great- grandchildren, Scott Adam, Jennifer Robin, James Austin, Kim Hee and Lisa Marie Colley, and Mallory Elizabeth Claybaugh. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Herman Ellis Meeks in 2001; and a sister, Mrs. Mildred M. Hinds. Bearers will be her grandsons. Honorary bearers are the members of the First Christian Church Bible Class. Mrs. Meeks has made this special request, “Please send no flowers. I have had ‘my flowers’ during my lifetime.
