McConnell Service for Richard E. McConnell, 81, of Duncan, who died today in Duncan, is pending with Don Grantham Funeral Home. ========= Duncan Banner 27 Nov 2002 R.E. "Dick" McConnell R.E. "Dick" McConnell, 81 years of age, was a loving and devoted husband, a nurturing, patient father and a man who lived his faith in God. He died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, in Duncan. Service is pending with Don Grantham Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Roy McConnell will officiate the service. The family will receive friends at 1204 Randall Court. Visitation at the funeral home will be until 9 p.m. today, from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Mr. McConnell was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Frederick, to Charlie E. Sr. and Lena Matthews McConnell. He married Dorothy June Kinslow on Jan. 17, 1943, in Duncan. Mr. McConnell was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy, a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the United States Army, and a Bronze Star recipient. He was a graduate of Duncan High School and attended Duncan Community College. He worked for Security National Bank for 34 years, retiring in 1978 as senior vice president. Mr. McConnell was a community leader for over 30 years and was Mayor of Duncan for eight years. He was past president of the Duncan Chamber of Commerce, past president of Duncan Noon Lions Club, board member of Stephens County Industrial Foundation, member of Duncan Lakes Commission, and a former member of the Elks Club and American Legion. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He taught the Chapel Class for a number of years, was a Sunday School teacher to teenage boys and was a longtime usher. He also served as "Santa Claus" for 32 years in Duncan's Christmas parade. Survivors include his wife of home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marilyn and L.D. Baker of Norman, Elaine and Wil Yarbrough of Siloam Springs, Ark., and Anita McConnell Copeland of Duncan; a brother and sister-in-law, Chuck and Alyce McConnell of Duncan; four grandchildren and their spouses, Marti and Aaron Tidwell of Albuquerque, N.M., Chris and Misti Gregston of Weatherford, Joanie and Shane Wilson of Plano, Texas, and Jennifer and Brad Royster of McKinney, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Blake and Parker Tidwell, Libbey Gregston, Lauren and Haylee Wilson, and Maegan Royster; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Honorary bearers are Larry Wilson, Shane Wilson, Brad Royster, Chris Gregston, Aaron Tidwell, Billy Dale Jones, Raymond Smith, Granville Ward, Hayden Dillard and J.L. Woolsey.
