Graveside services were held at 3 p.m., Monday, April 4, at the Marlow Cemetery, with Glen Matthews officiating. Arrangements were made under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home. Born Feb. 27, 1924, to James Matthews and Lillian Steele, in Marlow, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a preacher of the gospel for over 50 years. On July 6, 1944, he married Joella Waggoner, she preceded him in death on April 14, 1995. Then on Dec. 24, 1996, he married Barbara Avens, she preceded him in death in Dec., 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Kathleen and Glenna Matthews; and three brothers, George, Leslie, and John Matthews. Survivors include a son, James Matthews of Buena Park, Calif.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nina and Don Metzgar of Loveland, Col., and Leah and Tim Armstrong of Windsor, Col.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
