He married Mary Helen Black in August 1939. He later married Dorothy. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. He is survived by a son from his first marriage, Jimmy Mitchell of Duncan and a daughter by his second marriage, Judy Mitchell Doughtie of Chesapeake VA, three grandsons Mark Mitchell, Jody Mitchell, both of Duncan and Tracy Doughtie of Chesapeake VA, a granddaughter Tiffany Doughtie of Chesapake, a step-granddaughter Aloma Pinkart of Levelland TX, and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sibling, his wife Dorothy and a great-grandson Jimmy Ray Mitchell.
