Mrs. Murdock was born on Oct. 7, 1914, in Atkins, Ark., to Merritt Young Austin and Betty Alvadis Sweeden. They later moved to Vian, where she graduated from high school in 1933. While attending Central State College she met her beloved husband, James “Jim” Elmer. They were married on March 16, 1937, in Oklahoma City. They were “Neefie” to each other until Jim passed away from a heart attack in 1966. They helped farm the families’ Land Run farm, southwest of Perry, before Jim taught school for several years, ran a seismograph crew and went to work in the oil business. They moved to the Stephens County area in 1948, where Jim was the production superintendent for Perkins Drilling Company and she was one of the original telephone operators and supervisors in Alma. She also worked several years for Holbrook’s Flowers, the Physicians and Surgeons Hospital, and they lived in both the Velma and Duncan areas. She was a member of the Eastern Star and received her 50-year pin in 2000. They were both active members of the Wesley United Methodist Church. She loved playing the piano and keeping score of baseball games was a favorite hobby. They both loved to play duplicate bridge. She loved her ice cream, and made a homemade freezer daily for her family in the summertime, before she became physically unable. She dearly loved her grandson Mickey, who loved spending time with his “Granny.” She lived the last several years with her son, James Max, who took extraordinary care for her those years before she moved into Gregston’s Nursing Home in Marlow. She loved her family and will always be remembered as a loving, giving and compassionate person by both her family and friends. Survivors include two sons, James Max Murdock of Duncan, and Charles Lee Murdock and his wife, Billie, of Marlow; a grandson, Mickey Murdock and his wife, Cara, of Tulsa; a great-grandson, Max Allen Murdock; two sisters, Bessie Collins of Buffalo Valley, and Betty Copeland of Palestine, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
