All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Joel Neal Wassom Sr. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in W.W. Rix Funeral Home Chapel in Lubbock. Burial will be in City of Lubbock Cemetery. Local arrangements are by N.S. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Wassom was born in Lubbock. He attended Roswell High School in Roswell, N.M., where he became an All-American High School Football Player. In 1960 he joined the Navy where he was in the first graduating class of the Navy Seals. He served in the Vietnam War where he received 47 medals including the Purple Heart. He was discharged in 1964. He graduated from University of Texas at Permian Basin with a master's degree in archaeology. He moved to Amarillo in 1982 from Odessa. He married Barbara Butler on Dec. 28, 1984, in Clovis, N.M. He retired in 1987. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Joel Neal Wassom Jr. of Spring, James Wassom and Richard Butler, both of Amarillo, and Ryan Butler of San Antonio; three daughters, Lourie Winegar of Lubbock, Angie Leewright of Kress and Beverly Shannon of Forest; his mother, Hazel Courtney of Duncan, Okla.; a sister, Kathy Mickler of Park City, Utah; and 13 grandchildren. The body will be available for viewing from 8 a.m. today to noon Saturday at N.S. Griggs and Sons.
