Ivan E. Costner was born in 1926 in Guymon, Oklahoma. His parents came from humble beginnings; both his mother's and father's families had lived in earthen dugouts on the Oklahoma prairie. As a young boy, Ivan was a part of that great Dust Bowl migration that brought so many families to California. He attended local schools, and there met his lifelong love, June Etta Thouvenel. Their romance was interrupted by the Second World War. Ivan enlisted in the U.S. Navy, served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Lunga Point, survived Japanese kamikaze attacks, and returned home to Bakersfield before he even turned 20 years of age. Ivan and June were married in 1946, and had two boys, Larry and Ron Costner, both of whom thank God for their parents. Ivan worked at Douglas Refinery, later known as Kern Oil, for over 30 years. He also was a master cabinet maker. Ivan and June were avid round dancers, and belonged to several local clubs through the years. When June passed away in August, 2005, more than a little bit of Ivan went with her. We, his loving family of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, know that Ivan and June are now together. We like to think they are dancing contentedly, maybe to a favorite Benny Goodman tune. Our Dad, our Poppa, was a good and decent man. He always gave more than he received. He lived a full life, a rich life, a life that added to the lives around him. Let it be said of Ivan Costner: "He left the woodpile higher than he found it." Private graveside services with immediate family are planned, as would reflect his wishes. Greenlawn Southwest Mortuary Ivan E.
