Alton Watson passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 2, 2002 after a brief illness. He was born March 8, 1906 on a farm outside Guymon, Okla. to Mr. & Mrs. I.N. Watson. The family moved to Blair, Okla. in 1911 where he grew up with a sister and two brothers. All three brothers became physicians and surgeons. He received a BS in Medicine in 1927 and graduated first in his class in 1929 from the University of Okla. Medical School. He had a brief private practice in Altus and Britton before doing post doctoral work in Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania. He was Resident in Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat at Newark, NJ Eye & Ear Infirmary. In June of 1934, he returned to Okla. City and married Dorothy Lee Moseley. In 1945 he studied Rhinoplasty in New York. He was Professor Emeritus & past chairman of the Dept of Otolaryngology at the University of Okla. Medical School. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology, and long time member of the Okla. State and County Medical Associations. Over the years, he served St. Lukes United Methodist Church as Chairman of Administrative Board, Chairman of Finance Committee, Supt of the Adult Div. of Church School, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chairman of Pastor Parish Committee, Steering Committee of Budget campaign, Fund Drive General Chairman, & Executive Director of St. Lukes Foundation. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Okla. City University, on the Board of Directors of Founders Bank, President of the Okla. City Golf & Country Club, was a member of the Men's Dinner Club and a real estate developer. He was co founder and first President of Historical Preservation Inc. (later Heritage Hills). In 1969 Mayor George Shirk selected him to serve on the newly formed Historical Preservation Commission. In 1986, he and his wife, Dorothy were recognized by The Okla. Heritage Assoc. with the Stanley Draper Distinguished Service Award. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dorothy. He is survived by his sister, Claudia Reid, Tampa, FL, daughter, Ann Sheridan Watson, daughter and son in-law Marcia & Fritz Hunzicker and son & daughter-in-law, Dr. Alton & Jan Watson, grandchildren & their spouses: Dr. Marcia Meiring, Paul Meiring, Philip Meiring, Pieter Meiring, Elizabeth Hunzicker, Mary Christian Hunzicker, Andrew Hunzicker, Sheridan Judd, William Hunzicker, Jennifer Watson, David Watson & Tyler Watson, 19 great grandchildren and long time friend and care giver, Maple Tubbs. He retired from his medical practice in 1999 at the age 92. He was the epitome of an old fashioned family doctor, giving each of his patients the kind and gentle care they all remember. Those who knew Alton said he was generous to a fault. He was a dedicated Christian who lived his life and led others by his wonderful example. He was dearly loved by his family and friends of all ages. Words can't express how much we will miss him. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon, Monday, October 7th, 2002 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with Dr. Robert Long officiating. Burial will be at Fairlawn Cemetery in Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Lukes United Methodist Church Foundation or Archives, Oklahoma City University, Timber Trails Educational Project (Box TT, Sedona, AZ 86339) or the charity of your choice.
