Patterson TOPEKA, Kan. \\emdash Funeral for former Frederick resident Dr. Tom W. Patterson, 71, Topeka, Kan., was Friday at Burkhardt chapel with Bob Copeland officiating. Dr. Patterson died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, in Topeka. Burial was at Frederick Memorial Cemetery under direction of Gray Gish Funeral Home. He was born in Sept. 12, 1931, in Frederick to Walter R. and Dena Belle Adams Patterson. He graduated from Frederick High School in 1941 and attended the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1953 and a master\\rquote s degree in psychology in 1956. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska in clinical psychology in 1963. He married Naomi Bruey on Jan. 22, 1961, and served in Korea as a captain in the U.S. Army from 1953 until 1955 and in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1955 until 1963. He served his internship at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salt Lake City in 1960. He was director of the Psychological Services Center of the Department of Psychology at Colorado State University at Fort Collins from 1963 until 1971. While at Colorado State University, he was a member of the executive committee of the Department of Psychology, served as a practicum supervisor, clinical psychologist and was a graduate classroom instructor. He was in private practice as a psychologist from 1965 until 1971. He served as chief psychologist for the Child Developmental Center for State Department of Health in Cheyenne, Wyo. He was chief of psychology service at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Topeka, from 1971 until his retirement in 1995. While at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, he was a member of the clinical executive board, the education and training committee, the psychiatric care council and the chief of staff\\rquote s service committee. He had served as an adjunct professor for the University of Kansas, the University of Missouri at Kansas City, Kansas State University and Washburn University. He had served as a consultant for various institutions such as Veterans Administration Hospital in Vancouver, Wash.; Larned State Hospital in Larned, Kan.; Veterans Administration Hospital in Denver; Educo-Therapy Program at Fort Collins; the Headstart Program in Loveland, Co.; Lincoln State Hospital in Lincoln, Neb.\\rquote and the Norfolk State Hospital in Norfolk, Neb. He was widely published in a number of professional psychology journals, served on numerous graduate research committees and had been awarded numerous grants during his career. He received numerous awards, including the DAV Vietnam Veterans Award, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Hands & Heart Award, the Federal Civil Servant of the Year, VA Outstanding Awards and the Distinguished Service Award. He was a member of the Light of the World Christian Church and the Capital City Barbershop Chorus. Survivors include: a son, Dr. David W. Patterson, Champaign, Ill; a daughter, Carol Sue Patterson Baldwin and her husband, Richard, Topeka; two sisters: Frances Harness, Frederick; and Faye King, Houston; four nephews: Noel Patterson, St. Louis, Mo.; Michael Patterson, Krum, Texas; Randy King, Dripping Springs, Texas; and Tony King, Houston; four nieces: Sharon Woolsey, Hobbs, N.M.; Jeanne Loomis, Weatherford; Sue Ann Lewis, Frederick; and Deanna Medlin, Greenville, Texas; and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Florene Wallis; and two brothers: W.R. Patterson and Jack Patterson.
