Ashby, retired bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Kansas, died May2001. He was 72. Ashby was born in Tulsa and educated at Oklahoma State University and the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest. He was ordained as a priest in 1955 for the Diocese of Oklahoma. He served churches in Hugo, Antlers, Durant, and Colgate. In 1959, he became rector of St. Luke's Church in Ada, where he remained for 20 years. Elected bishop of western Kansas, he was consecrated in Salina and served there until his retirement in 1995. During his career, he was active on the liturgical committee, was a Mills Fellow in Pembroke College and the University of Cambridge, and served as a chaplain in the Oklahoma National Guard with rank of lieutenant colonel. Upon retirement, he made his home in Tulsa, where he assisted in pastoral visitations in the diocese. He was noted for his preaching and his heritage as embodied in the Book of Common Prayer. He is survived by his wife, Mary Carver Ashby of Tulsa; two daughters, Anne Ashby Ghost Bear and Elizabeth Ashby Wiseman, both of Tulsa; and four grandchildren. Fitzgerald's Ivy Funeral Service.
