The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. ================================================================================ Submitted by: Shelley Lynch on 23Oct2007 MATLES - Sidney Alan, a long-time Tulsa businessman, was born in Hominy, OK on March 21, 1928 where his parents, Harry and Elizabeth Matles, ran a dry goods store. Soon afterwards, the family moved to Tulsa, OK to open Renard's Department Store. Sid attended Tulsa public schools and graduated from Central High School. He then went on to graduate from the University of California (Berkeley). It was there that he became acquainted with Donna Kaplan who would later become his wife of 55 years. Following military service as a Lieutenant in Counter Intelligence and the Coastal Artillery Command in the U.S. Army, Sid worked for the Levi Strauss Company. He then returned to Tulsa to join a new family venture, "Sidney's", a high-end women's wear store. An entrepreneur and salesman, Sid established several businesses, including Sidney's Wines and Liquors and Sidney's Packaging and Marking Inc., a specialty shipping room supplier. He later designed and marketed SCUBA dive wear, as well as bicycle active wear. Sid is survived by: his wife, Donna; son, Steven (Marty) of Reno, NV; daughter, Gail Kirkland (Jerry) of Dallas, TX; and grandchildren, Bernie and Molly Matles; and Ashley and Katie Kirkland. In lieu of flowers the family wishes memorials be made to the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art, 2021 East 71st Street, Tulsa, OK 74136 or to the Temple Israel Library, 2004 E. 22nd Place, Tulsa, OK 74114-2800. Funeral Service 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 23, Temple Israel. Interment following, Old Temple Section of Rose Hill Cemetery. The Fitzgerald Ivy Chapel, 585-1151.
