She passed from this life August 10, 2002. She was the only daughter of Harry and Effie Orr. Along with her three brothers, Tad, Sidney and Fred, she was raised in Wagoner, Oklahoma and attended school there. Upon graduating high school, she moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked for the Department of the Navy through World War II. It was at the wedding of a mutual friend that Jewell met a young man from Bakersfield, Charles Cariker. He was a soldier heading for occupation duty in Japan. It was during their correspondence that he proposed and she said yes. They were married on November 14, 1946, and were still married when Charles passed away in 1993. Jewell leaves behind to cherish her memory two sons, Michael and wife, Sylvia and David and wife, Nancy. Also three grandchildren, Spec. Daniel Cariker of the U.S. Army, Seaman Jake Cariker of the U.S. Navy and Becky Rutledge, along with her husband, Brandon of Bakersfield. She is also survived by her great-granddaughter, Kara Rutledge, 10 months, of Bakersfield. Jewell Cariker was a friend, wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. Through her wisdom and example she taught us all the meaning of tenderness, compassion, patience, tolerance and most of all, love. She leaves behind a loving family and many friends and would ask no one to mourn her passing. She is with Daddy now and is where she wants to be. Visitation will be at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Blvd., today, Tuesday, from 12:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and graveside services will be Wednesday, August 14, at 11:00 a.m. Msgr. Ronald Swett of St. Philip the Apostle will officiate. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Jewells name.
