Pell 1923-2006 Jim Pell was born in Okay, Oklahoma, on August 11, 1923, and grew up in that area. During WWII he served as a radioman in the Naval Air Corps. Upon his release from the service, he married Elsie V. Ingram of Idabel, Oklahoma. They moved to California in 1947 along with their extended family and settled in the Santa Rosa area. Jim received a BA from San Francisco State, and made his career in the world of retail. He is best remembered as a longtime manager of the Army/Navy Surplus Store on Main Street in Walnut Creek. When he retired, he relocated to Grass Valley to fish the trout streams he loved and to pursue his lifelong interest in coin collecting. Jim had aspired to be a teacher at one point early in his career and used to joke about why that never happened. Instead, he married a teacher and was a grand teacher of fishing to his children, his grandchildren and anyone else who showed the slightest interest in this great passion. He was a man who would laugh with you until tears came to his eyes, who would stand by you during hard times, even when you'd caused them, and an example for his children of what it takes to be a good father. He'll be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elsie; his sons, Jim of Hat Creek, CA and George of Oak Harbor, WA; his brother, Clifford of Clear Lake, CA; two daughters-in-law; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; beloved nieces, Sue Houweling, Marion Massey, and Tommy Touchstone; nephew Lonnie Whitehead; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. No services will be held. Private interment will be at the Lafayette Cemetery.
