Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise Thursday, October 19, 2006 Ruth A. Smith Ruth Ann Smith, 84, resident of Bartlesville, and former resident of Copan, was met at the gates of Heaven on Monday evening by John, Jack, Charlie, Tom, Jeanne and Chuck. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at Dewey, Oklahoma. Interment will be in the White Rose Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Thursday at 7:00 P.M. Funeral services and interment will be under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory. Casket escorts will include; Jimmie Holloway, Dexter Smith, Justin Smith, Orville Ridinger, John Tackett and Casey Herren. Honorary casket escort will be Larry Beamguard. A memorial has been established and those who wish to make a contribution in memory of Mrs. Smith may do so to; Cornerstone Hospice 3414 S.E. Kentucky Ave. Bartlesville, Oklahoma 74006. Ruth was born August 12, 1922 at Okay, Oklahoma to Edward and Stella (Rogers) Watts. She was raised and received her education in Okay, Oklahoma graduating high school there in 1940. Ruth was employed at the Griffin Foods Company and later at Camp Gruber at Muskogee, Oklahoma where she met John Carl Smith. They were married on April 14, 1946 at the St. John Catholic Church in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. In 1958 Mrs. Smith was diagnosed with throat cancer and was the first woman in Oklahoma to have a laryngectomy. She worked as a nurse aide for several years before attending Licensed Practical Nurse training at Tri-County Technology Center at the age of fifty-two in 1974. During her nursing career Mrs. Smith was employed at nursing homes, Washington County Memorial Hospital and Jane Phillips Medical Center in the Bartlesville area. Mrs. Smith had many hobbies, crocheting, fishing, cooking for all her kids, growing flowers, feeding the hummers, raising chickens and too many other interests to mention. Mrs. Smith had three dreams, being a nurse, living in the country and owning a station wagon. She got them all. Survivors include; three daughters Sarah Tackett, Mary Beamguard and her husband Larry and Judy Holloway and her husband Dink all of Bartlesville; one brother Jack Watts of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; one sister Cinda Linduff of Miami, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
