Tara Woodward, 16, died after the Volkswagon in which she was riding pulled onto Oklahoma 51 from Ben Lumpkin Road near the high school at 3:39 p.m., Coweta police reported. The car was hit broadside by a pickup truck traveling east on Oklahoma 51. Another passenger in the car, Amy Harrington, 16, was admitted to St. Francis Hospital and was reported in stable condition by a hospital spokeswoman. Three others in the car including the driver were treated and released. The driver of the truck was not injured, the police said. "Tara was one of the best players on our team," said Brandi Cremer, who played softball with Woodward for the past seven years. "She was real aggressive and hated to lose. She worked really hard," said Cremer, 15. Cremer said Woodward also enjoyed youth group activities as a member of Coweta's First Baptist Church, including going to camps, lock-ins, and trips to Six Flags Over Texas. Sudents at the high school, where Woodward was a 10th grader, were "real quiet" Wednesday and were allowed to go home or to visit the families of those involved in the accident, Cremer said. The school counselor and a crisis team were available to students also, she said. Longtime family friend Nancy Tyler said the scene at the hospital was very emotional Tuesday evening as friends learned of Woodward's death. "The hospital was full of boys crying. These boys were her friends, not boyfriends. It has been really hard on her classmates," Tyler said. Woodward was a member of the National Junior Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Business Leaders of America and Future Homemakers of America, Tyler and Cremer said. Coweta Police Chief Dale Bradley said the death was the first traffic fatality in the city limits in the last three years. Woodward is survived by her parents. Ronald and Rosemary Woodward of Coweta; a brother, Jamie Warren of August, Ga.; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Woodward and Mary Ella McCall, all of Coweta. A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday with burial at Coweta's Vernon Cemetery, a spokeswoman for Wright Funeral Home in Coweta said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Wagoner County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/wagoner/wagoner.html
