Anderson, 77, of Amarillo died Thursday, July 29, 2004. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rusty Dickerson officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Anderson was born in Cimarron, Kan., on Jan. 8, 1927, to Arthur and Pearl Anderson. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1944, lettered in both basketball and football and was very active in school activities. After several months of working in oil fields in Oklahoma as a roughneck, he joined the Navy during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He attended college on the G.I. Bill starting at Oklahoma A & M in Okmulgee then transferring to Kansas State University, where he graduated with a B.S. degree in geology. Don married Helen Howell on April 7, 1950, in Ashland, Kan. He began his career as a petroleum geologist with Phillips Petroleum for 17 years, Mesa Petroleum for seven years and the remaining years as an independent geologist. During this time the family lived in Bartlesville, Okla., Wichita Falls, Abilene, and Oklahoma City before moving to Amarillo in 1967. Don enjoyed his work, family (especially his grandchildren), friends, golf, hunting and fishing. He was a cub master at Olsen Park School for three years in the 1960s. He was a member of the Methodist church, Panhandle Geological Society, A.A.P.G., a past member of the Landman Association, past board member of Tascosa Country Club and councilman for the KSU School of Geology. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Chris Jones and husband, Bennett, of Arlington and Kim McCarty and husband, Steve, of Amarillo; a son, Greg Anderson and wife, Connie, of Dallas; three grandchildren, Taylor Jones, Merrill Jones and Nick Sandlin; a sister, Bonnie Phillips and husband, Eldon, of Hurst; a nephew, Randy Becker; and a niece Janalyn Lawler. The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176-0001; Olivia's Angels at BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176-0001; or a favorite charity.
