Newspaper article: Mrs. Bert De Groot and Daughter Dead. Dec. 1920. Funeral services for Mrs. Bert DeGroot, who died at her home in Dewey township Wednesday of last week, were held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the M.E. Church in Luther, Rev. H. L. Cloud of Hennessey officiating. Burial was made at Fair Lawn cemetery. Alta Pearl Swearingen was born in Trenton, MO., November 18, 1891, departed this life December 22, 1920, at 1:30 p. m., age 29 years, 1 month and 4 days. She was united in marriage to Bert DeGroot; April 26, 1913. To this union was born two children, Herbert Allen aged 6 years and Hazel Marie 25 days old. Mrs. DeGroot was a member of the M. E. church at Luther where they made their home until two years ago when they moved to their farm where they resided at the time of her death. She was a loving wife and mother and to know her was to love her. Besides the bereaved husband and children she leaves a father, mother, five brothers, one sister and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her loss. Following the death of Mrs. DeGroot three days, on Christmas day their infant daughter Hazel Marie passed away at the age of 28 days. Burial was made Sunday at Luther, Rev. Frank Bell having charge of the services. The choir sang by request the two beautiful songs, "Jewels" and "God Will Take Care of You."
