He lived in the state of Oklahoma for close to one half of a century, 40 years being in Bartlesville. During that time he was a prominent figure in the oil, natural gas, and petrochemical industries. His work in research and development at Phillips Petroleum Co. resulted in 66 U.S. patents and to his appointment as one of the three Directors of Research. As a member of several committees of the American Petroleum Institute and of the Natural Gas Processors Association he helped shape much of these organizations' research. He was awarded a Distinguished Service Citation of the NGPA. He is listed in "American Men of Science" and in "Who's Who in the South and Southwest". Prior to coming to Oklahoma, he worked in the oil industry in Canada and in Trinidad, British West Indies. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, he earned a Masters Degree in Chemistry at the University of B.C. and PhD at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Dr. Findlay was a member of the Board of Directors of Fractionation Research Inc. and was President of Heat Transfer Research Inc. He was a member of Toastmasters, Jaycees, American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Great Books Club, Unitarian Fellowship, Republican Mens Club and the Independent Petroleum of America. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and the Westminster Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife Ethel Jean Findlay; by three daughters, Roslyn Rogers of Banning, California, Marilyn Bethea of Oklahoma City and Carolyn Findlay of Bartlesville. He has 3 grandsons, Robert Bethea of Washington, DC, Brian Bethea of Baltimore, Maryland and Brandon Bethea of Los Angeles, Calif. There are 3 great-grandchildren, Elena, Jordan and Riley Bethea. Services were held Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
