Hier Laura Bettye Bailey Hier, 89, of Hugh Chatham Nursing Center died Thursday, January 2, 2003. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 A.M. Monday, January 6, 2003 at First United Methodist Church Chapel, Hawthorne Road, Elkin by Rev. Sandy Giles, Mrs. Hier was born in Warren, Arkansas, October 13, 1913 to Bert and Ruth Bailey. She attended Monticello A & M College in Arkansas and later worked as a dental assistant in Warren, Arkansas. She met her husband Doug, while he was on assignment in Warren, Arkansas. They were married March 14, 1936. While on various assignments with oil companies, they lived in Java until forced to leave by the Japanese penetration in the Pacific during World War II. Among other places they lived are Denver, Co.; Shreveport, LA.; Houston, TX; Wichita Falls and Amarillo, TX; Bartlesville and Oklahoma City, OK; Prince Edward Island; Calgary, Canada and Brisbane, Australia. They moved to Emerald Bay in Texas in 1971 after Doug's retirement from Phillips Petroleum Company in Amarillo, TX. Seven years later, they moved to Singapore when Doug was called out of retirement to do consulting for Phillips. In 1991, they moved to Elkin, NC where they resided at Parkwood Place for five years, later moving to State Road, NC, Where she lived until moving to Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in August 2001. Mrs. Hiers was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, a sister, Pat Sappenfield and granddaughter, Paige Shumate De Vries. She is survived by one son, Charles (Alby) Hier of Pittsburgh, PA, three daughters, Bonnie (Robert) Sanders of Amarillo, TX, Rozanne (Paul) Shumate of State Road, NC and Melinda (Bill) Rule of Bartlesville, OK. Eleven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Surry County, NC or the Paige Shumate De Vries Memorial Music Scholarship Fund, Wake Forest University, NC.
