Harper Mr. John Calvin Harper, age 81, retired Owner-Operator of Harper Vet Supply Store and longtime resident of Bartlesville died Monday morning, March 17, 2003, at Jane Phillips Medical Center. Mr. Harper was born on October 9, 1921 in Wellington, Texas. The son of John C. and Verne (Thomas) Harper. He graduated from Wellington High School and enlisted in the U. S. Navy 1943. He served in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the service in January 1946, he entered Oklahoma A&M University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree, in 1949, in Animal Science. John and Phyllis Jean Darnold were united in marriage on May 31, 1947, in Stillwater and made their home there until both had graduated. They moved to several locations in Oklahoma and Texas, settling in Bartlesville in 1954, where he was Regional Salesman for Ralston-Purina for 20 years. He later was employed as Sales Manger for Harvest Brand Industries in Pittsburg, Kansas. In 1981, he opened the Harper Vet Supply Store, retiring from the business in 1996. He loved the cattle business and all the dear country people that he dealt with. He was a very active member of First Baptist Church and at one time taught a boys Sunday School Class. He enjoyed the out-of-doors, especially quail hunting, photography, and working in his yard. He loved airplanes and enjoyed attending fly-ins, epically the one in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Mr. Harper is survived by his wife, Phyllis of 55 years; three daughters, Paula Edwards and husband Sonny of Greenville, SC, Cheryl Laverty and husband Carl of Laverne, OK, and Jonnie Edwards and husband David of Stillwater, OK; a sister, Clarice Moore of Kerrville, TX; and four grandchildren, Beth and Ben Laverty of Laverne and Rachel and Abby Edwards of Stillwater. His parents preceded him in death. A memorial service for Mr. Harper will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church with Dr. Joe Dan Fowler officiating. A private burial will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Neekamp Funeral Home. A memorial has been established in Mr. Harper's name for the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church.
