All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Surnames: RAYMOND, BARNES, EVANS, REICH,MCWILLIAMS Elam Jewett Raymond from 2-2-2003 Examiner Enterprise Elam Jewett Raymond, 84, former Mayor of Dewey and retired owner/operator of Dewey Dime and Dollar Store, died on Friday morning at his family residence in Dewey. Funeral services for Mr. Raymond will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday in the Arnold Moore-Dewey Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Eddie J. Barnes will be the officiant. Private family final rites will be directed by The Arnold Moore-Dewey Funeral Home. A memorial in remembrance of Mr. Raymond has been established with the Washington Co. SPCA. A native of Nowata, Okla., Elam Jewett Raymond was born on September 15, 1918. He was the son of the late Elam Jewett Raymond, Jr. and Lillian (Evans) Raymond. He was reared and received his education in the Nowata community and was graduated with the Senior Class of 1935 from the Nowata High School. He continued his education and was a student at the University of Tulsa prior to attending the Oklahoma A. & M. College at Stillwater and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1940 from Oklahoma A. & M. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He and the former Miss Imogene Reich were married in Miami, Okla. on June 15, 1941 and they made their first home in San Francisco, Calif. He was employed for Butler Brothers Wholesale prior to Bruce Griffin Corp. in Management. In 1953, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond moved to Dewey, Okla. and owned and operated the Dewey Dime and Dollar Store from 1954-1972 during which time, Mr. Raymond served on the Dewey City Council and was elected as Mayor of the City of Dewey. He worked for Community Action as Director and he also worked in Nowata for Bill Brown in apartment management. Mr. Raymond was retired in 1982 and since that time has continued living in Dewey in retirement. Mr. Raymond attended the Dewey, United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Imogene (Reich) Raymond, of the home in Dewey; one son, Elam Jewett Raymond, Beggs, Okla. and one daughter, Mrs. Wade (Joel Ruth) (Raymond) McWilliams, Tulsa, Okla.; five grandchildren, Carrie Catherine Raymond, Joan Denise Raymond, Elam Jewett (Jack) Raymond, Ashleigh Joel McWilliams and Wade J. McWilliams and two great- grandchildren as well as one brother, Donald E. Raymond and his wife Mildred, Kansas City, Missouri.
