TAYRIEN OCNS - September 13, 2001 - Miss Dorothy P. Tayrien, age 80, a native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, died Tuesday, September 11, 2001, in the Jane Phillips Medical Center. The Funeral Mass for Miss Tayrien will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Friday in the sanctuary of St. John's Catholic Church, Bartlesville, with Father Hung Viet Le as the celebrant. Final committal rites for Miss Tayrien will be in the family plot of the Memorial Park Cemetery. Services and interment are under the direction of the Neekamp Funeral Home. Miss Tayrien was born in Bartlesville, June 15, 1921, the daughter of Ida May (Bennett) and William C. Tayrien. She was the granddaughter of Cyprian Tayrien, a pioneer settler of Bartlesville. She was raised and educated in Bartlesville except for three years when her family moved to Colorado Springs. She graduated from Bartlesville High School in 1939 and then attended two years of junior college in the new College High School. She entered St. John's School of Nursing in Tulsa, graduating in 1945. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1948 from the University of Colorado and an Arts Master degree in Social Studies, with a major in Administration, from the University of Chicago in 1959. In 1980 she had a sabbatical year of post-masters study at the University of South Carolina. Miss Tayrien had a 36 year career as a registered nurse, approximately six years of which were spent in nursing service positions, and 30 years of which were spent in nursing education positions. She was a staff nurse at Pawhuska City Hospital, Denver General Hospital, Boulder Sanitarium in Colorado, St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashville and was a supervisor at Washington County Memorial Hospital in Bartlesville. Nursing education positions she held were: teaching fellow in medical- surgical nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and instructor in nursing fundamentals at University of Oklahoma School of Nursing 1948- 1950; assistant professor and assistant dean, Baylor University School of Nursing, 1954-1956; assistant professor, Southwestern Louisiana University School of Nursing, 1958-1960; associate professor and assistant director, East Tennessee State University Department of Nursing 1960-1965; associate professor, Southern Illinois University School of Nursing, 1965-1968; professor and director of Associate Degree, Nursing Program, Kankakee Community College, Illinois, 1968-1970; associate professor and director of Continuing Education Program, Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing, 1970-1981. During the time she lived in Charleston, South Carolina, Miss Tayrien co-owned real estate and conducted a rental business. She retired in 1982 and returned to Bartlesville and continued her home here since that time. During her career she was a member of the National League for Nursing, American Nurses Association, American Association of University Women and American Association of University Professors. She served on the boards of the Altrusa Club of Kingsport, Tennessee, Tennessee Nurses Association, Lewis and Clark Community College of Illinois, Public Health Department of Lafayette, Louisiana, and the Council of Collegiate Education for Nursing of the Southern Regional Education Board. She was a grantee of the South Carolina Regional Medical Program in 1976 and served as a site visitor for accreditation of continuing education for the American Nurses Association 1978-1980. She was a frequent public speaker on nursing and nursing education and contributed articles to professional journals. In Bartlesville, Miss Tayrien had served on the Community Education Committee of the school system and on the boards of LaQuinta Preservation Foundation and Women and Children in Crisis. She was a member of the Allied Arts and Humanities Council, Washington County Retired Educators Association, AARP and member at large of American Association of University Women. Her biography has been listed in the following Marquis Who's Who; Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in American Nursing, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in America. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. A memorial in Miss Tayrien's name has been established for Elder Care of Bartlesville, and those who wish to contribute in her memory may do so in care of their office 410 E. Frank Phillips Blvd., Bartlesville, OK 74003. Miss Tayrien is survived by a sister, Treva M. Horton of Irvine, California; three nephews, Douglas S. Tayrien of Tulsa, Dr. Richard B. Tayrien of Paradise Valley, Arizona, and Richard G. Horton of Goldsboro, North Carolina; and two nieces, Dr. Gisell Horton of Austin, Texas, and Terri Lynn Horton of Irvine, California. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Richard D. Tayrien and Leonard F. Tayrien.
