Born October 8, 1920, the third of four children to Carrie Calhoun and Herman S. Walker. He is survived by one brother, Bill Walker of Fort Worth, TX. Most of his childhood was spent in Hutchinson, Kansas. He attended the University of Kansas and was an honor graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He lettered in both basketball and tennis. His KU basketball team of 1941-42 was legendary and at age 76, Charles drove with his son from Texas to Kansas to play again in an alumni reunion game with the Jayhawks. He was the oldest man on the court that day in Lawrence, Kansas. Upon graduation from college he accepted a job with Phillips Petroleum Company and worked for this company his entire career. Charles was responsible for many large refinery construction projects in Texas and New Mexico and then in 1966 was transferred to Ponce, Puerto Rico to supervise the construction of a harbor and a fibers plant. He and his wife Louise retired to Columbia Lakes, a small golf community near Houston where Charles enjoyed golf and Texas politics. In 2001, they moved to Bellingham. Charles married Louise Kirton in Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1943. They were married for 62 years. Their children are Julia (husband, Bill) Findley, Bellingham; Dr. Kirt (wife, Mary) Walker, Houston; and Margaret (husband, Marc) Curtis, Bellingham. The far-flung grandchildren include Matthew Morgan (wife, Melanie) Houston; Amanda Morgan ( husband, Sean "Cal" McAllister) Seattle; Shawn Findley, Austin; Adah Walker Fitzgerald (husband, Bo) Charlotte,; Ted Kirton Walker and fiancé, Caroline Ewing Bloomington, Indiana; Chloe Louise Walker, Austin; Meredith Curtis New York, NY; and Zach Curtis in Bozeman, Montana. Great-grandchildren Emma, Evan and Louisa Morgan live in Houston. The family wishes to acknowledge the special team of caregivers who helped Charles: Cheri Wells and Brad Snowder at Vining Villa Adult Family Home, Sharen Connell, Janet Doran, Pat Rains, Kathy Rau, and Kathea Rasmussen as well as Whatcom Hospice. Private family service is pending. Memorials may be made to the Bellingham YMCA or to the Alzheimer's Society.
