Carpenter Sutton resident Argel Alonzo "A.A." Carpenter, 72, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Church in Clay Center. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery with military rites provided by American Legion Post No. 61 of Sutton. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Carpenter was born Nov. 5, 1926, to George Edward and Bessie Lee (Chism) Carpenter near Sentinel, Okla. He attended Port Consolidated School in Oklahoma. He was an agent telegrapher for the Santa Fe Railroad from 1943-51 and for three years for Burlington Northern Railroad. He was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed at the Hastings Naval Ammunition Depot as a guard from 1945-46. On Oct. 17, 1946, he married Annette Lillian Johnson in Vernon, Texas. He farmed and raised livestock in Clay County for 33 years. In 1984 he retired from farming and worked for George Brothers in Sutton from 1985-90. He was a member of the Clay Center Christian Church and served as a deacon and on various committees. He also was a member of the American Legion Club. Survivors are his wife; two sons, Dale of Harrisonville, Mo., and Neal of Saronville; two daughters, Paula Smith of Johnston, Iowa, and Anita Laue of Kearney; one sister, Irene Banks Howard of Sentinel, Okla.; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Memorials may be given to the church or the family.
