Catherine was born on Jan. 23, 1918 in Canute, Okla. She was the fifth child of Sebastian and Mary Schones. She attended St. Anthony's School of Nursing in Oklahoma City, graduating in 1938, and soon after, began her professional career as a registered nurse. In 1942, she joined the U. S. Army, and in 1944 she was deployed to the European Theatre as a First Lieutenant in World War II. In fact, she traveled to Europe on the Queen Elizabeth. In December of 1945, she was honorably discharged from the army and returned to the states to resume her nursing career. On July 5, 1944, while serving in the army together, and prior to being deployed to the European Theatre, Catherine married Bon Gidney, her husband of 44 years, until his death in 1989. Together, they raised two daughters, Mary Etta and Melanie. Catherine was a life long member of St. Mary´s Catholic Church, serving for many years in the Alter Society and volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul. She adored her three grandsons, Mark, Michael and Scott, and her two great-grandchildren, Walker and Avery Catherine (Avery was born on April 21, 2007, just one week before her passing). She is also survived by her daughters; Mary Etta and husband John, and Melanie, and husband Phil; also surviving are her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her family always came first and she made many sacrifices during her life so that she could provide for them in the best way she could. In return, her family and friends loved her and will miss her love and devotion. She was truly a beautiful woman! Among the things she loved were, the beach, wildlife and bird watching, planting a vegetable garden, and most of all, cookies and ice cream.Ê She was so very fond of visits from the young children at St. Mary's School, who presented her with many hand-made gifts.
