Http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.Htm ===================================================================== ::Union Cemetery--Bakersfield CA The Bakersfield Californian Bakersfield Californian, July 18, 2002 Clarice Castleberry Holson Services: Sat., July 20, 2002 A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 20, St. Pauls Episcopal Church, 2216 17th St. for Clarice Castleberry Holson, 90, who passed away July 15, 2002. The Rev. John Wilcox will officiate. Private burial will be held at Union Cemetery. Clarice was born in Dill City, OK, on October 11, 1911, the granddaughter of a Civil War soldier. Her husband, and many family members affectionately knew her as Jack. She met Thomas William Holson in Borger, TX, while employed there as a secretary for Phillips Petroleum Co. they were married in 1930 at the beginning of the Great Depression, and moving frequently seeking employment in her husbands printing trade, bore three children in three different states. The family eventually settled in Bakersfield in 1938 when Tom found employment with the Bakersfield Californian newspaper. Clarice became a bookkeeper, retiring from that position with Vests Drugs Store in 1969 after 25 years. Clarice, from a Baptist upbringing, married into the Episcopal Church, and was a devoted member of St. Pauls in Bakersfield for 64 years, holding many Parish and Diocesan positions. One of her works was to catalog and organize, from church records, all of the known memorials received by St. Pauls going back to the Churchs establishment in 1879. Clarice and Tom were members of Caledonia Chapter 391, Order of Eastern Star. She served 60 years and was Worthy Matron in 1951. After their retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, Europe, Alaska, and Mexico. Her beloved husband, Tom, in 1996, and a son, Charles Henry, who died in a tragic accident in 1952, preceded Clarice in death. She is survived by daughter, Jane Kleindienst, and husband, Jerry; son, Tom Jr., and wife, Betty, both of Bakersfield; grandchildren, Susan Karnes and husband, John of Bakersfield; Jeff Holson and wife, Julie of Huntington Beach; Janet Murphy and husband, Bob of Wofford Heights; Judith Walters and husband, Tom of Morro Bay; great- grandchildren, Spencer and Jordan Karnes, Ashley, Taylor, and Sarah Holson, Erin and Julie Walters and Jake Murphy, and sister-in-law, Verna Holson Scratch, and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Pauls Episcopal Church, 2216 17th St., 93301, or to Hoffmann Hospice, 6501 Schirra Ct., Suite 301, 93313. No visitation is scheduled.
