She passed away May 10, 2002 in Great Plains Regional Medical Center, Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 3 days. Services were held Monday, May 13, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Whinery Savage Chapel, officiated by Brother Bill Adcox. Burial followed at Red Hill Cemetery under the direction of Whinery Savage Funeral Service. Mattie attended school at Merritt and Colter. She was married to Glen Houston Peterson on November 16, 1930. They were married on a snowy day south of Hammon, Oklahoma by a farming preacher who had to milk his cows before the ceremony. They stood on the east side of the road to be sure they were in Custer County. After their marriage they made their home on the family farm northwest of Canute. Due to Glen's failing health they moved into Canute in 1971 and later to Clinton in March of 1990. Glen and Mattie celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary the Sunday before he passed away on November 17, 1997. Mattie moved to Elk City in March of 1998 to make her home She was a member of the Colter Church of Christ and attended the 5th and Elk Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers and 4 sisters. Her survivors include, one son and daughter-in-law, Glen Dean and Pat Peterson of Bethany, OK; one granddaughter, Debra Marler; one great granddaughter, Sasha Howard; one great grandson, Justin Glen Marler, all of Durango, CO; one sister, Lena Roles of Pampa, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
