Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Unity Church in South Austin. Mrs. Hurd was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Waynoka, Okla. She was the daughter of Ellen Vivian and Henry James Wheeler. She was raised in Amarillo and was married at the age of 18 to Sylvan Avondon Hurd. Lousie's life led her to many different places - St. Charles, La.; Chicago, Ill.; Houston, Seoul, Korea and finally, Waco where she lived until the last few months of her life. Louise made friends wherever she went. She was a loving mother and grandmother, deriving much pleasure preparing and enjoying family dinners and just being with her children and grandchildren. She was an excellent cook, and made a chocolate pie that just won't quit. She was happiest in the company of her family, especially while playing cards and dominoes (42), and enjoyed a glass of wine in the evening. Louise had a special relationship with all who knew her and knew very well how to care and do for others. Louise's game was bridge. She played it often, taught it to many, and more often than not, won the game for the day. She spent countless hours reading, practicing, and playing. She loved this game. She was a member of Richfield Christian Church in Waco and was involved with the church community as much as her health would permit. Louise felt blessed by church members who visited often during the illness of her husband. Louise gave the best possible care at home to her husband, Sylvan, during his long battle with Parkinson's disease. Louise spent the last two months of her life at Hospice Austin Christopher House where the fabulous community of professionals and volunteers honored and loved her, joining her family in making her transition an experience that was as fulfilling and comfortable as possible. Louise will be missed very much by both family and friends - especially by her family. Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvan Avondon. Survivors include two sisters, Ellen Joy Rook and Mary Evelyn Melton; her children and grandchildren Sylvia Louise Crixell, husband, Mike and children Carly Dee and Mason Alexander Huffman; Timothy Jackson Hurd, wife, Elizabeth and children Daniel James, Stephen Joseph, and Sarah Elizabeth Hurd; and Vivian Lee Stidvent, husband, Tom, and children Christopher Thomas and Andrew Wesley Stidvent. The family will be at her daughter's house. The family suggests memorials be to Hospice Austin Christopher House or Richfield Christian Church of Waco.
