All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Riggins Cemetery--Riggins ID Knight, John Howard John Howard Knight passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007 of heart failure. He was born May 1, 1918 in Alva, Okla. to Solomon and Melvina Knight. He grew up on a farm in Kansas, the sixth child in a family of seven children. His mother died when he was just six years old. John showed strong qualities of self-reliance at an early age and was nicknamed "The Govenor" at 18 months of age. John moved to Greenleaf, Idaho when he was 18, and graduated from Greenleaf Friends Academy. He married Arlene Gilbert in 1938, and they raised three children. He worked for George Weber and learned the cattle business. He also had a five acre truck farm where he raised tomatoes and built their first home for $75. John enjoyed music and sang in a men's quartet that performed in the area for church and revival services, accompanied by Mary Evelyn Metcalf. During WW II, he moved the family to Wichita, Kan. where he worked for Boeing Aircraft as a lathe operator. After the war the family moved back to Greenleaf where he built and operated the Greenleaf Lockers and Slaughterhouse. John was involved in church, community, and Friends Academy activities. He also had a small Jersey dairy farm, which he was especially proud of. John loved to garden, build rock fireplaces (which were pieces of art) and numerous homes. He also loved hunting and fishing. He loved to help other people, and especially his children build their homes. He was a man of many talents, full of ideas and was happiest when he had a "project." He retired from Simplots in 1970 and moved to Riggins, Idaho. He helped to build the Community Church and later remodel the old Forest Service building into what he called The Riggins Manor Retirement Center. He married Katie Woodley in 1980 and they operated the Manor for 18 years, until he was 80. It is now operated by his daughter and son-in-law, Gordon and Sharon Nine. He spent his last years gardening on Squaw Creek with his son Ernie. John is survived by his wife Katie of Riggins. His sister, Lorene Aldrich of North Las Vegas, Nev., his son Alan Knight of Riggins, his daughter and son-in-law, Gordon and Sharon Nine, his son and daughter-in-law, Ernie and Beverly Knight of Grangeville. Step daughter and son-in-law Debbie and LeRoy Shaw and step son Steve Woodley all of Riggins. John and Katie have 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren. John gave praise to God for his long, productive life and was content to move on to his new Home. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 2, at 1 p.m. in the Salmon River Community Church, Riggins, Idaho. Viewing will be from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will follow at the Riggins Cemetery.
