Co. of Chicago. page 254 ALFRED M. BROWN Mr. Brown, son of Samuel and Charlotte (Smith) Brown, was born near Centerville, Appanoose county, Iowa, on October 23, 1856. He was reared on a farm, and had but poor early opportunity to secure an education, attending school only during short intervals of time. When he became seventeen years old, however he moved to Centerville, where for three he attended high school. During the next few years he farmed, but eventually he engaged int he flouring mill business in company with his father. He followed this line of commercial activity for two years, but finding that it did not agree with his his health he then sold out his interests and emigrated to Baker county, Oregon. he taught school for a while after his arrival, but as soon as possible he embarked in the stock raising industry, procuring a tract of land for the purpose, and to this he has devoted himself ever since. His farm, situated two and a half miles southeast of Express has been improved by the erection of a comfortable residence, a fine, commodious barn and other buildings, and with a beautiful, well chosen orchard. He keeps quite a large herd of cattle. Our subject was married in Centerville, Iowa, on September 27, 1883, to Miss Linda, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Mishler, and to them have been born six children, namely: Theron C., Laurel L., Golda W., Minnie P., Opal A. and Athel M. Mr. Brown is also interested in mining and owns some good properties.
