Co. of Chicago. page 338 Marion A. Butler Mr. Butler was born in Douglas county, this state, on May 21, 1865, the son of Benjamin and Lydia (Beard) Butler, natives of Ohio, who crossed the plains in 1853. They spent the first winter in Clackamas county, then took a donation land claim five miles southeast of Oakland, where they resided until 1871, moving then to Olympia, Washington, in which town their home was until 1878. Our subject attended the common schools wherever the family resided, finishing his common school training in Pomeroy. He then took a two years' course in Whitman college, and finally graduated from Lewis Collegiate Institute at Lewiston, Idaho. Upon receiving his diploma he engaged in teaching school in Idaho, but later he went to Farmington, where he spent a period of two years in the drug business. Going thence to Spokane he followed real estate brokerage until 1892, in which year he located at Pendleton, Oregon, and began the practice of law. In 1899 he came to Baker City, where he has built up a very lucrative and flattering practice. He is the law partner of the well known Senator John H. Mitchell. Our subject has contributed his share toward the mining development of this section since coming here, and has at present some valuable properties. He formerly held a controlling interest in the Virginia mine. As before intimated, Mr. Butler is a very enthusiastic politician, his party affiliations being with the Republicans, for whose success he has wrought very faithfully, making many campaign speeches. His fraternal connections are with the K. of P., Gauntlet Lodge No. 8, of which he is a past chancellor, and with the W. of W. On July 13, 1885, our subject married Miss Alice, daughter of David S. and Acena A. Trescott, natives of Ohio, but residents, at present of Asotin county, Washington. The issue of this union is two children, Harold R. and Ella May. The family reside at 1940 Seventh street, Baker City.
