Co. of Chicago. page 291 Alfred Caviness Mr. Caviness is a native of Indiana, born October 12, 1840, being the son of John and Susan (Poe) Caviness, natives of North Carolina, and Indiana was his home until fourteen years old. He then accompanied the remainder of the family to Henry county, Iowa, where he farmed until 1865. He then crossed the plains to Baker county, making the journey with oxen, as the custom of the time was, and settled on a spot within sight of his present place of abode, six miles west of Baker City. During the first two years of his residence in the west, he followed freighting from Umatilla Landing to the various mining camps, then he farmed in the Powder river valley for about three years, after which he engaged in placer mining in McCord's gulch. For several years he devoted his energies to this, but in 1897 he purchased eighty acres where he now resides and engages in farming and stocking raising. He follows the diversified plan, believing it better to till intensively a small tract than to farm superficially a large area. In religious persuasion Mr. Caviness is a Methodist, his membership at present being in the M. E. church at Pocahontas. He was married August 3, 1862, in henry county, Iowa, to Sarah P. Elliot, the daughter of George and Dorcas Elliot, and to their union eight children have been born, namely: George, a resident of Pleasant Valley; John, residing in Baker City; Bert, living on Burnt river; Sidney, a resident of Baker City; Frank, working in the Elkhorn mine; Fred, at home; Pink; Annie, attending high school at Baker City.
