Co. of Chicago. page 263 ELI CHANDLER Hamilton county, Indiana, is the native place of our subject and the date of his birth was 1851, he being the son of Enoch and Sidney (Wright) Chandler, who were natives of the Buckeye state, but whose home was in Indiana until the time of their demise. At the age of twenty-two Mr. Chandler started out for himself, crossing the plains by railroad and stage to Jimtown, which is now Sparta, in Baker county, and in December, 1872, he settled in Eagle valley, where he devoted himself to farming and stock raising. He sold portions of his estate, until he has but fifty acres left, turning his attention, meanwhile, to the commercial world. Eighteen hundred and eighty-eight was the date when he first opened a store in Newbridge, and in 1899 he removed it to Richland, and since that time he has continuously prosecuted this enterprise and he has to-day a fine stock of general merchandise and his patrons are numbered by hundreds, while his trade is constantly increasing. His fine capabilities and uniform geniality and upright business principles are instrumental in making him the most popular merchant in his section. Fraternally, he is affiliated with the I.O.O.F., Lodge No. 123, in Eagle Valley. The marriage of Mr. Chandler and Miss Susie B., daughter of William Rich, and a native of Kentucky, was celebrated in 1899. It is pleasant to state that Mr. Chandler is one of the most highly respected members of society in the valley and is considered a leading property owner and substantial citizen, who is dominated by wisdom and skill of a high order in his business enterprises.
