Co. of Chicago. page 344 Charles Fleetwood Charles Fleetwood is the son of Asa and Elizabeth (Johnston) Fleetwood, and was born in Bridgeport, Baker county, on September 28, 1870. He was reared on his father's farm, from early youth displaying energy and industry in the assistance that he rendered in the duties of the farm, and gaining from the common schools his educational training, which has been greatly increased by carefully and constant reading. When he had reached his majority he entered the business realm of life on his own account, taking up first the raising of stock. This he has continued ever since and is making a marked success in that line. In 1893 he bought the store at Hereford and in a most successful manner has operated it since that time. He has manifested marked ability in handling his commercial interests and has built up a flourishing trade that is constantly increasing. He carries a well assorted and full line of general merchandise that is fitted for his surrounding country and is one of the leading rural merchants of the county. In addition to the duties that are incumbent upon him in these lines, he ha also been postmaster since entering the store and has discharged the duties of that office in satisfactory manner. Mr. Fleetwood has spent his entire life in the neighborhood where he now resides and is a son of the county in which his native country may well take pride. The marriage of Mr. Fleetwood and Miss Maggie A., daughter of John R. and Sarah J. (Duff) Vancil, was celebrated on September 7, 1891, and to them has been born one child, Maud Ethel, who is attending school at Hereford. Mrs. Fleetwood's parents live near Union, this state. Mr. Fleetwood is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, where he holds the position of venerable counsel. Mr. Fleetwood's father lives about two miles west from Hereford, but his mother died on March 20, 1899. Although just beginning a career of business activity, Mr. Fleetwood has displayed such integrity and uprightness that he has won the confidence of all and the outlook for his future success is very flattering.
