Co. of Chicago. page 298 John Fraser Mr. Fraser was born in Scotland, whence come so many of our best and most industrious citizens, in 1842, being the son of Duncan and Mary Jane (Campbell) Fraser, natives of the same famous land, where also they passed the entire time of their pilgrimage in the scenes of earth. Our subject left the "banks and braes and streams" of his native land when he was twenty-five years of age and sought his fortune in the "home of the free." He first settled in Ohio and engaged in farming for a time, and then migrated to Umatilla county, where he took up sheep raising. About two years later he came to the eagle valley and here he has lived continuously since. At first he embarked in the sheep business here, but soon disposed of this animals and devoted his attention to raising cattle and tilling the soil, adding also the culture of fruit. He owns at the present time a quarter section of land and his industry and thrift are manifested in the high state of culture which is shown in his farm. For a number of years previous to the change in the territory of the county he was a stock inspector of Union county, and in this trying position he rendered valuable and satisfactory service. At the present time he is discharging the duties of justice of the peace, having been re-elected to his third term, thus displaying the confidence that is reposed in him by the people of his precinct. In fraternal affiliation he is associated with the K. of P., Lodge No. 86, in Eagle valley. The marriage of Mr. Fraser and Miss Flora, daughter of Peter and Mary (Monroe) Grant, who were farmers in Scotland, was solemnized twenty-six years ago, and to them have been born the following children: Fred A., Duncan P., Mary J., and Flora, who died two years ago, aged nine years, and her remains lie buried in Eagle valley. Mr. Fraser is a man that commands the respect and has won the confidence of all that know him.
