Co. of Chicago. page 251 CHARLES F. HYDE He is a native of the occident, being born in California on October 29, 1857. His father, Henry H., a native of New York, came to Oregon in 1843, and thence to California in 1849, the family removing to Grant county in 1869, locating at Canyon City. There the father opened a general merchandise establishment, being the first in Grant county, and he continued in the prosecution of this business until his death in 1877. Two years later the mother died and our subject removed to Forest Grove, this state, where he received a collegiate course, following which he spent five years in reading law with Whalley & Fechheimer, of Portland, his admission to the bar occuring in 1881. The following year he came to Baker City and has continued here ever since in the practice of his profession. and today he has a very lucrative and large practice. For five years he has been city attorney of Baker City, and for four years he was district attorney of the sixth judicial district, which includes seven counties. In all these public relations he has served with faithfulness and efficiency. He is a leader in politics and very active in the interest of good government. He is the owner of much valuable city property, besides other holdings. His marriage occurred in Baker City on September 22, 1886, Miss Mary E. Packwood becoming his wife at that time. To them have been born six children: Edith Whalley, William H., Eleanor M., Loring C., Gilberta P., Marion. Mrs. Hyde is a native of Auburn, this county, being the first white child born there. Mr. Hyde is fraternally affiliated with the F. & A. M., the B.P.O.E., the W. of W. and the I.O.R.M., in all of which orders he is a very popular member.
