For twenty years he remained in that place and then sought his fortune in the new world, landing in New York on July 18, 1853. From there he migrated to Pennsylvania and engaged for wages on a farm, continuing in that capacity for one and one-half years. Following this he went to Cincinnati and then by boat down the Ohio and up the Mississippi to St. Paul and then returned on the same boat to Keokuk, Iowa, and the following year he went to Illinois. In Adams and Hancock counties, he remained until 1863, and then on March 13, fitted out an ox team conveyance and started for the Pacific coast. Baker county's attractions led him to remain here and on May 3, 1864, he settled where he now lives on Willow creek about four miles northwest from Haines. He held by squatter's right three hundred and twenty acres and secured the title to the same in 1873. He now owns six hundred acres of land in good quality in one body. Mr. Loennig was first married in Adams county, Illinois, on June 28, 1857, Mrs. Mary Zeigler, a native of Bavaria, becoming his wife at that time and to them were born five children: Henry, married to Celestine Relling, now living on Rock Creek; Elizabeth, deceased; Mary, wife of William Shoemaker, who is operating a flour mill on Rock creek; Frank, married to Emma Lang and living on Muddy creek. Mrs. Loennig had by a former marriage, two children, Cecelia and Johanna, both being small at the time of her marriage with Mr. Loennig. Cecelia and Mr. Loennig's oldest child died about two years later with membranous croup. Johanna is now married to Jake Ensminger, and they live on Muddy creek. Mr. Loennig gave as dowry to his daughter, Mary, two hundred and eighty acres of land and to his son Frank he gave three hundred and twenty acres. Mrs. Loennig died on August 26, 1876, being beloved and esteemed by all. On April 2, 1877, Mr. Loennig contracted a second marriage at Warsaw, Illinois, Barbara George, a native of Bavaria, Lower Frontier, becoming his wife at that time. By this marriage he has no children. Mr. Loennig has always been active in the affairs of the county and especially in educational matters, having furnished money to build the first schoolhouse on Rock Creek and buying the furniture entirely out of his own means, for which he has received but little renumeration, and he has served as director for twelve consecutive years in his home district, No. 7. He has ever been faithful in all of his public and private service and has won the confidence of all who have the pleasure to know him. --End--
