Co. of Chicago. page 324 Alonzo Long Mr. Long is a native of Mercer county, Illinois, born July 31, 1847, his parents being Lewis and Sarah Ann Long. In 1854 he crossed the plains with his parents, making the journey by the aid of the slow moving oxen, as the custom of the time was. Eventually they settled in Linn county, Oregon, where our subject devoted himself to the basic art of agriculture until 1872, during which year he came to Baker county. In due time he settled on Muddy creek and engaged in the business of farming and raising cattle. As above stated, he was for many years a leader in this dual industry in the county, and he still owns his original home and superintends the operation thereof, but at present he is himself engaged in managing his grain handling establishment in Haines and has been since 1899. As a business man he is energetic and progressive possessed of the good judgement and foresight essential to success in commercial pursuits, and as a citizen and member of society he enjoys a very enviable standing. In Linn county, Oregon, on May 13, 1869, our subject married Miss Julia Ann Taylor, a daughter of James and Elizabeth, and a native of Oregon. They have ten children: Ida Belle, wife of William Jackson, living west of Haines; Charles Denino, married to Ida Hodges, a native of Arkansas, and living on the home place; Clara May, wife of William J. Welch, of Haines; John R.,living on the home place and married to Daisy E., daughter of A. J. Toney; Viola Ann, wife of R. P. Anderson, a resident of Haines; William Oscar; Lee Cleveland; Archie Jackson; Lora Ellen; Rosa Odelia.
