Co. of Chicago. page 276 James O. Maxwell Mr. Maxwell was born near Rocheport, Boone county, Missouri, on November 24, 1853, his parents being Wallace and Anne Maxwell. He remained in his native state until about twenty-two years of age, coming then to California, where he wrought for wages during a full quadrennium, thereupon coming to Baker county. He purchased three hundred and twenty acres four miles northwest of Haines, and set assiduously and zealously about the task of improving and cultivating the same. Conserving the rewards of his thrift and enterprise, he was enabled to add to his original realty holdings from time to time until he is now the owner of eight hundred acres, and has control of about a thousand acres in all. His place is perhaps as well improved as any in Baker county, and is stocked with about two hundred head of fine, graded Shorthorn cattle, thirty of which are dairy cows. Mr. Maxwell has also many hogs and horses, and a very choice family orchard. In religion, Mr. Maxwell is a Baptist, his membership at present being in the church of that denomination at Haines. In Baker county, on January 23, 1887, he married Miss Nancy A., a native of Illinois, and a daughter of James and Elizabeth Hand, and to their union have been born seven children, all of whom are at home, namely, Lena A., J. Wallace, Myrtle E., John E., Rosa A., Charles Dewey and Omer O. In addition to the excellent improvements that adorn and enhance the value of the agricultural portion of Mr. Maxwell's estate, he has one of the most beautiful and comfortably and tastily furnished residences in the county, in which good cheer abounds and joy adds its grace to the material comforts of competence.
