Co. of Chicago. page 325 Burton Miller Mr. Miller was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, on February 15, 1865, being the son of John and Elizabeth (Stevens) Miller, and in his native place he received the educational discipline to be had in the common schools. As early as fifteen years of age he started in life's battles for himself, migrating first to Deming, New Mexico, and thence to Alma, in the same territory, where he occupied himself in stock-raising until 1888, at which time he came to Pocatello, Idaho, and embarked on the mercantile sea. For a decade he carried on a successful business in that place and then sold out and came to Sumpter and took up prospecting for a time. On October 10, 1900, he took the first load of lumber into what is now Whitney and built a store and again commenced operations in the commercial realm. His energies sand ability have been directed into the channel of upbuilding and extending his trade, and he has been eminently successful, for today his customers are counted in large numbers and come from all adjacent points. He is considered one of the brightest and most enterprising citizens of the town, and on February 16, 1901, after Whitney was incorporated, he was chosen the first mayor, thus being the recipient of the highest honors that his fellows had to bestow. In this capacity he has rendered efficient service, and is faithful in the care of the interests of all. Fraternally, Mr. Miller is affiliated with the A.O.U.W., Lodge No. 122, of Whitney, and holds the position of master workman; he also belongs to the W. of W., in Pocatello. The quiet joys of celibacy have heretofore claimed Mr. Miller, having never chosen the responsibilities of matrimonial life.
