Co. of Chicago. page 341 Reuben Reed He was born in Union county, Ohio, in 1836, and was taken thence to Clayton county, Iowa, by his parents, John and Malinda (Asher) Reed. In that state he was deprived of his father by the icy hand of death, and in 1859 he brought his mother and the remainder of the family to Colorado. He mined there a couple of years, then embarked in cattle raising, an industry which continued to engaged his energies uninterruptedly for thirteen or fourteen years. In 1882, however, he sold out and came to Pine valley, Baker county, homesteaded one hundred and twenty acres of land a mile and a half north of Halfway post- office, and engaged in diversified farming, although he has also given some attention to mining and prospecting and is the owner of interests in various properties at Cornucopia and Snake river. He has been an energetic man in his endeavors to secure a competency, and at the same time contribute toward the development of his section, and is richly deserving of whatever success has been his. His integrity and worth of character have secured him the confidence and esteem of those who know him, giving him an enviable standing in his community. Mr. Reed was married in Clayton county, Iowa, in 1862, to Sarah A. Zimmerman, a native of Richfield, Pennsylvania, and daughter of Jacob G. and Catherine Zimmerman, and to them have been born eleven children: John, Ida, Katie, who died in 1888: Charlotte M., Ella, Melinda, Effie, Charles, Delmer, Myrtle and Cleveland. Most of the children are now married and doing for themselves, but Charles, Delmer, Myrtle and Cleveland are still at home. Mr. Reed's father was a soldier in the War of 1812, and his mother died in Colorado. Her mother died in Pennsylvania when this daughter was seven years of age, and her father died in Iowa in 1884.
