After receiving a common school education, he engaged in farming, continuing a devotee of the basic art until 1870, when he embarked in the drug business in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He divided his energies between this and mercantile pursuits until 1873, when he removed to Roswell, Illinois, and turned his attention to operating a meat market. Two years were thus spent. In 1878, he crossed the plains with the mule teams to the Grande Ronde valley, where he accepted a position as foreman on the right of way for the O.R. & N. Company, who at that time were constructing their road. Upon leaving their employ he engaged in hotel keeping in Orodell, but after a year's experience in this, he sold out and moved back to Kansas. There he spent another period of two years in the drug business. Returning then to LaGrande, he once more engaged in hotel keeping, and for two years also discharged his duties as town marshal. In 1890, he opened a hotel in Bourne, but soon gave his attention more particularly to dairying and mining, though he ran the E. and E. boarding house, for about eight months, serving at the same time as watchman of their mill. In 1896 he located the Silver Dick, which he afterwards sold for $27,000. He owns quite a herd of neat cattle and some horses, also some realty of value in the town of Bourne. Fraternally, Mr. Rusk is an Odd Fellow. His first marriage was solemnized in Indiana on March 12, 1863, Miss Ellen, daughter of John and Elizabeth Sloan, then becoming his wife. To their union were born four children, two of whom are living, namely, John, and Effie, now Mrs. Fred Budde. Mrs. Rusk died on October 1, 1872, and on March 4, 1873, our subject married Miss Nellie, daughter of Lorenzo D. and Martha E. Hayes, and to them were born four children, Burton S., Loui R., Walter W., and Mabel B.
