Co. of Chicago. page 358 Joseph Schwartz This enterprising merchant of Sumpter, Oregon, is a native of Germany, born June 16, 1868. He received the advantages of the excellent public school system which has made his native country famous, and a year later, or, in other words, when he was fifteen years old, came to the United States. He settled in Lincoln, Nebraska, where for the ensuing five and a half years, he wrought assiduously as a clerk in a store, gaining that excellent knowledge of commercial pursuits which has stood him in such good stead since. He then went to Omaha, and clerked four years longer, going then to Sioux City, Iowa, where he embarked in the grocery business, continuing in the same for about three and a half years. Eventually selling out, he came to Oregon, settled in Oregon City, and engaged in the clothing business. He was numbered among the enterprising merchants of that town for two years, but in 18699 he sold his business and holdings and went east on a visit. Returning the following year, he started in business in Sumpter, Oregon, and through the establishment of his enterprise, known as the Hub Clothing Store, has been so recent, he has already built up a large trade, and his business is extending and ramifying more and more widely as time goes on. Mr. Schwartz' experience is an exemplification of the statement that "concentration is the secret of success." He has devoted himself diligently and uninterruptedly to mercantile pursuits, gaining an intimate knowledge of business methods and this, coupled with his natural sagacity, foresight and good judgement, has enabled him to achieve a success in the commercial world seldom reached by one of his years. But though our subject attends strictly to business, he is not so exclusive but that he can take the interest becoming every good citizen in public affairs, and he has ever manifested a public- spirited solicitude for the advancement and the welfare of his town and county. Fraternally Mr. Schwartz is affiliated with the W. of W. and the K.O.T.M. In Iowa on October 28, 1896, he married Miss Rosa Ginsberg, also a native of Germany.
