Co. of Chicago. page 338 George B. Small This prominent editor, publisher, and political leader was born in Butte county, California, on January 14, 1864, the son of S. H. and Frances E. Small, natives of Missouri, who crossed the plains with ox teams to California in 1860. When eight years old our subject accompanied the remainder of the family to Baker county, in the public schools of which county he received his common school education. He then attended for three years Blue Mountain university at La Grande, working during vacations in the Democrat office, learning the printer's trade. When he retired from college he assumed editorial management of the paper in the office of which he had acquired his technical skill and to this work he gave himself uninterruptedly for several years. In May, 1887, our subject and I. B. Bowen purchased the Democrat, and they now have, it is said, the finest and largest newspaper and job printing plant in the state of Oregon. Mr. Small attended the national editorial association at Chicago in 1893 as a delegate from this state, also the one at Asbury Park, new Jersey in 1894. He is also past president of the Oregon press association. Prominent in the journalistic profession, our subject is no less famed as a political leader. His voice has been many times heard in Democratic state conventions and more than once he has served as chairman of the county central committee. Like many other prominent men in Baker county, Mr. Small is interested in mining properties, and he is also the owner of some very desirable city realty, including his fine residence on the corner of Seventh and Washington Streets. Fraternally our subject is affiliated with the B.P.O.E., of which he is a past exalted ruler, and with the K. of P., in which he is a past chancellor. He attended the grand lodge of the Elks at St. Louis in 1899 as a delegate, and he has also twice attended the grand lodge of the K. of P. He was married on January 20, 1887, the lady of his choice being Miss Nea. B. Hazeltine, a daughter of old and respected pioneer parents. They have had three children, namely: Eva B., deceased; Nea Hazel, and Frederick Irving.
