Co. of Chicago. page 349 H. W. B. Smith Among the men who are occupying leading positions in the grand forward march of Baker county's mining interests the man whose name appears above is certainly to be given a prominent place. 'Tis a well known fact that though the mineral resources of this section have been in course of development since the early 'sixties, the period of discovery is as yet only begun, so that there is still much room for the genius and energy of such a man as our subject to find abundant operation. It is to be hoped that his push and courage in endeavoring to develop new mines and produce an augmentation of Baker county's wealth will find their well earned need. Mr. Smith was born in Portland, Oregon on May 5, 1866, his parents being George R. and Catherine J. (Morrison) Smith, natives respectively of Maine and New Brunswick, and pioneers of this great commonwealth of 1861. He received a common school education in the public schools of Portland, then for three years followed the transfer business, after which he tried his fortune for two years in a retail cigar and confectionery store, his own venture. The ensuing three years were devoted to traveling as a salesman for the J. N. Matschek Candy Company, and the four years succeeding the expiration of that period to the grocery business at Long beach, Washington. Having eventually disposed of this last mentioned business, he again became a traveling salesman, representing various wholesale confectionery firms until 1896, when he entered the employ of the American Biscuit Company, for whom he traveled over eastern Washington, Oregon and Idaho until July, 1900, when he resigned to accept the general managership of the Cracker-Summit property, situated at Bourne, Oregon, in the famous Cracker creek district. This property consists of nine claims adjoining the well known Eureka, Excelsior and North Pole properties on the west and the Columbia on the north, so that our subject and his company entertain not unreasonable hopes that sufficient development will bring to light another wealth producer. Mr. Smith has a force of men at work at present, and is pushing developments with all vigor. Our subject is also interested in numerous other promising properties, among them the Cyclone, in the famous Virtue district, near Baker City, of which he is a half owner, likewise he has some city property in Sumpter. He is a very energetic man and is justly regarded as one of Baker county's most valuable citizens. The marriage of our subject was solemnized in Waitsburg, Washington, October 7, 1899, when Miss Sophia M., daughter of Duncan and Marion Mason Ingraham, became his wife.
