He was educated in his native state and also received the invigorating exercise of assisting to till his father's farm until he was sixteen years of age, when he embarked on life's arena for himself, his first venture being to learn telegraphy, following the same in the employ of the B.C.R. & N. Railroad Company until 1874. Finding that it was necessary to satisfy his desire for more active life, at that time he embarked in contracting a knowledge of which important industry he had gained before. For two years in Iowa and one in Nebraska he prosecuted his business and then in 1880 determined to verify the experiences of that most unique of all undertakings, crossing the plains by team. He journed to Baker City and immediately upon arriving began operations in his contract work and building, which he followed continuously until 1884 when he was appointed to the position of superintendent of the water works system of Baker City, and to the discharge of the duties there incumbent upon him he has given his time and attention continuously since. This long term of service in caring for this department of the city's government and interests in itself speaks convincingly of his ability and trustworthiness. He is a member of the Maccabees lodge in this city and very popular in this relation. The marriage of Mr. Stern and Miss Sadie E., daughter of John H. and Harriet Mitchell, was solemnized in Baker City on December 7, 1884, and to them have been born two children: Virginia M. and Frank C.
