Co. of Chicago. page 365 William Wiegand Mr. Wiegand is a native of Allegan county, Michigan, born May 8, 1866, his parents being John and Ann Wiegand, natives respectively of Germany and England. He passed his early youth in the commonwealth of his nativity, receiving a common school education, then engaged in the lumbering industry, continuing in the same until 1893, when he came out west and turned his attention to mining. He was in this line of endeavor but a short time, however, when misfortune overtook him; he met with an accident which rendered it impossible for him to continue in that pursuit and with true resourcefulness and versatility, he embarked in merchandising, buying out the dry goods store of Kear & Edwards, in Bourne, and establishing the Wiegand Wonder Store. he carries a full line of dry goods, notions, tobacco, cigars, and confectionery, owns the building in which he is now located, and has a large an constantly increasing trade. Mr. Wiegand is also the owner of some other buildings in the town and of many mining interests in the vicinity. Thus has he brought success and prosperity out of an accident which would have crushed and ruined a less resolute and resourceful man. Our subject is treasurer of his town and agent of the Express and Telephone Companies. Fraternally he is a Pioneer of the Pacific, of which order, also, he is treasurer. The marriage of Mr. Wiegand and Miss Annie, daughter of J. A. and Annie Zerlant, was celebrated in Bourne, on October 16, 1901, and they are highly esteemed members of society.
