Co. of Chicago. ELIJAH B.WOODWORTH Mr. Woodworth was born in Warwick county, Indiana, on October 3, 1835, being the son of Benjamin and Mary Woodworth. When two years of age he was taken by his parents to Massac county, Illinois. His education was received in the schools of Cincinnati, and as early as 1854 he became desirous of viewing for himself the undiscovered regions of the boundless west and accordingly engaged with a freight outfit to Salt Lake and then made his way from there to California, where he embarked at once in mining, continuing thereat for eleven years, at the end of which time he had gathered a fortune, principally on the Feather river. But, as is so often the case of this occupation, he invested in another section and lost his hard earned dust. During the excitement on the Salmon river he started thither but stopped at Granite and later went to Canyon City, where he was again favored with success in mining. Two years later he migrated to Idaho City, where he spent five years in the search for nature's vaults of treasure and then went to the Grand Ronde valley and from there he came to this county, where he has been for thirty years constantly following his chosen occupation. In the last few years he retired from the more arduous activities of the mines and settled on a farm seven miles west from Baker City, where, engaged in the pleasant duties of the basic art of agriculture, we find him at the present time. The marriage of Mr. Woodworth and Miss Frances Mitchell was solemnized in 1864, in Idaho City, and to them have been born the following chldren: Eliza; Daisy; Molly; Bessie, married to Jack Chadd; and Minnie. Mr. Woodworth is a man of sterling principles and possessed of fine abilities, which have rendered him great service as an exemplary member of society and a stanch and faithful citizen, while his demeanor has been such that he has won for himself the confidence and esteem of the people. --End--
